Clearly I’m working on the assumption that Brexit is a Very Bad and Risky Thing, unlike Andrew Lilico! I do think much of his ‘aspirational objective setting’ stems from an essentially sentimental attitude to CANZUK — which is partly why its rationale swings back and forth between economics and geopolitics.

On a side note: I think it probably is fair to note that you can easily end up saying “I am idealistic; you are sentimental.” I believe in the European Union as our continent’s greatest peace project and a way of governing European relations on the basis of law, not just balance of power. I’d argue the difference is that my sentiment also fits with economic and geopolitical reality, of course, but I wouldn’t claim or wish to be a desiccated calculating machine myself!
